Motown Museum temporarily closes for its final $75 million expansion phase

The historic 'Hitsville U.S.A.' headquarters paused its tours in January to complete an ambitious architectural project that will reopen in 2027.

The Motown Museum in Detroit has entered the crucial stage of its massive transformation. On January 20, 2026, the institution closed its doors to the public to allow for the final construction of its 50,000-square-foot expansion. This $75 million project aims to modernize the campus without losing the essence of the original house where Berry Gordy created a musical empire. The plans include a new welcome plaza, immersive exhibit rooms, and a professional theater. Although traditional tours are suspended, the museum's leadership has confirmed that this pause is necessary to inaugurate the complete 'Motown Experience' in the spring of 2027, promising a world-class tourist destination that will celebrate the legacy of artists such as The Supremes and Stevie Wonder.
